Renteria

I thought former Cardinals shortstop Edgar Renteria was supposed to be washed up. At least that's what his diminishing batting average over the last three seasons has seemed to indicate...

But you'd never know it from watching him play in the World Series. He's hitting .462 in the Fall Classic with three hits in his first three at bats Sunday night. Renteria looks more like the kid who won the 1997 Series for the Marlins than he does the aging player that has plodded though the last two seasons...

It's a shame the Cardinals misplayed Renteria's free agency and let him get out of town. He was as productive a hitter as anybody could expect at shortstop. And I really enjoyed watching him play in St. Louis.

The Cardinals have always been known for their shortstops from Leo Durocher to Marty Marion to Ozzie Smith. And it doesn't seem right that the most important position on the infield has become a bargain bin for St. Louis.

I would have loved it if Renteria would have come back for an encore as a free agent a couple of years ago instead of signing with the Giants. But San Francisco vastly overpaid and that was the end of that...

Still, Renteria is one of the main reasons I'm pulling for the Giants this year.
