According to reports out of the general manager's meeting in Florida, the Cardinals are interested in former Orioles, Marlins, Rangers, Royals, Astros, Rockies, Blue Jays, Rays and Brewers catcher Greg Zaun as a backup to starter Yadier Molina.
Zaun missed much of the 2010 season with injury. But he could be a nice addition to a young St. Louis bench. He's a .252 career hitter with a little bit of pop in his bat. And he's been around the block a few times. So he shouldn't upset the apple cart too much when he's behind the plate calling pitches.
While the Cardinals say their budget is stuffed to the gills with more than $100 million committed to for the upcoming season, they seem to be reluctant to hand the backup job to longtime minor leaguer Bryan Anderson -- even though Anderson played pretty well in a fill in role in 2010.
AOL Fanhouse reports that former Cardinals bullpenner Dennys Reyes is close to signing. He's choosing between offers from the Phillies and the Marlins.
Philadephia's cozy park doesn't seem like a good fit for Reyes compared to the spacious digs the Marlins call home. But it is worth it to get beat on a little bit to have a better chance for post season glory? And then there's the matter of who is offering more money...
