The Cardinals have signed former Mets reliever Raul Valdes to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, according to mlb.com.
A lefty, Valdes was 3-3 with a 4.91 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings pitched. But he was oddly much more effective against righties than lefties. Righthanded hitters were held to a .216 batting average against Valdez. Lefties hit .330 against him.
St. Louis GM John Mozeliak said Valdes represents bullpen depth. But he thinks he has a chance to fill the second lefty spot in the bullpen vacated by the Dennys Reyes.
I would hope Valdes is not the end of the quest for bullpen help. He's 32 years old and has less than 60 major league innings under his belt... The Cardinals need someone who can retire lefties more than they need another righty in disguise.
