Mather chopped by Cardinals, hooks on with Atlanta

Joe Mather tried to make the Cardinals big league roster as a third baseman, a centerfielder and as a pinch hitter.

But in 2011 he'll have to try to stick with Braves. Joe Mather was claimed on waivers Wednesday by Atlanta.

The 28 year old played in 90 games for the Cardinals, compiling a .233 batting average with eight home runs. He struck out 42 times and walked 14, prompting many to believe that his swing was just too long for the big leagues.
