The Phillies have called off their plans to sign former Cardinals reliever Dennys Reyes.
After being linked to Philadelphia for weeks, it was announced that Reyes had agreed to a $1.1-million, one-year deal earlier this week. Now it's suddenly been pulled off the table, according to reports out of Philly.
I wonder if Reyes might have failed his physical or showed up (even more) out of shape... It would certainly explain his second half meltdown for the Redbirds last season. He spent some time at the end of August on the disabled list in 2010 which partially explains his wildly monthly splits.
In April and May Reyes gave up four hits in 16 2/3 innings pitched. Although he did allow 10 walks, the portly southpaw turned in a WHIP of about .8 base runners an inning. In June, he was bombed for 12 hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings pitched for a 3.23 WHIP. He pitched 8 1/3 innings in July and had a decent 1.3 WHIP. But in August he was batted around to the tune of a .462 batting average against and a 3.00 WHIP.
