Reds back at it again

The Reds have not yet formally asked to change their name to the Cincinnati Former Cardinals. But, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually happens.

Word from the Cincinnati Enquirer is that the Cardinals' NL Central rivals are now pursuing former St. Louis shortstop Edgar Renteria.

Renteria said earlier this off-season that he would like to play for the Cardinals, Marlins or Giants. But he turned his nose up at a $1-million contract offer from San Francisco and the Redbirds probably couldn't afford to pay much more. Florida has denied any interest in the 2010 World Series MVP.

As reported here previously, the Reds let lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes go to free up some money to improve the offensive side of the club, so they could likely scrape together a better offer for Renteria.

In addition to Renteria, outfielder Scott Podsednik and Orlando Cabrera are said to be possibilities for the Cincinnati roster in 2011.
