Cardinals Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith easily leaders the other candidates in a USA today readers poll on the subject of who was the greatest player in any professional American sport to ever wear number one on his uniform.
With more than 5,000 ballots cast, the Wizard has gained 41 percent of the vote, more than double the 19 percent collected by former Yankees infielder and manager Billy Martin in second.
Also on the poll are Dodgers infielder Pee Wee Reese (16 percent), former NFL quarterback Warren Moon (12 percent), Phillies centerfielder Richie Ashburn at 8 percent and Red Sox second baseman and coach Bobby Doerr.
I'm not going to complain about the selection of Ozzie, who was a pure joy to watch play. What I would give for another shortstop like him... But I think there are probably some pretty good NHL goalies that sported number one in their days that should have at least made the ballot.
