It's official: Wainwright needs ligament replacement surgery

The second opinion wasn't any better than the first.

Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright does, in fact, need Tommy John surgery. The team announced Thursday morning that he'll go under the knife soon and that his projected return is midseason 2012.

Right now, according to GM John Mozeliak, the plan is to move Kyle McClellan to the rotation and try to heal from within. I wouldn't mind seeing the Cardinals make a run at Kevin Millwood -- mostly because it concerns me to see the club dip into their depth before the first spring training game has even been played.

But if I were Mozeliak, I wouldn't be willing to pay more than $1.$1.5 million for the veteran hurler who suffered through a terrible 2010 campaign.
