It appears that one former Cardinals reliever has beaten out another for the last spot in the Mets bullpen.
Blaine Boyer, not Jason Isringhausen, will head north with New York on Thursday, the club announced. But that doesn't necessarily mean that things are over for Izzy.
According to reports over the last week, the Mets were very impressed with the way Isringhausen pitched and they like the idea of a veteran presence in the 'pen. But they're worried about Izzy's balky elbow that kept him out of a few spring training games.
Izzy said he would not go to the minors. If he didn't make the Mets roster, he planned to go home. But New York has asked him to stay at extended spring training to continue his comeback. No word yet on if he'll accept the offer.

The Cardinals career leader in saves, Isringhausen in seven saves short of 300 for his career and hopes to reach that milestone before he hangs up his spikes. Unfortunately, even if he makes it to the Mets, he doesn't figure to get many save opportunities in 2011.
