Former Cardinals reliever Jess Todd, who was designated for assignment earlier this week by the Indians, has been claimed by the Yankees.
Todd, the player to be named later in the ill-fated deal that brought Mark DeRosa to the Cardinals for a few weeks of injury-hindered baseball, spent some time in the big leagues last year with Cleveland but didn't make its major league roster out of spring training.
He struggled in Class AAA so the Tribe set Todd free in order to clear space on its 40-man roster. The Yankees had to designate versatile infielder Kevin Russo to fit Todd in.
The Cardinals seemed more reluctant to give up Todd than they were to part with closer Chris Perez who is saving games for Cleveland these days. So I thought the Birds might try to get Todd back into the system. But the Yankees claimed the righty pitcher before National League clubs had a shot at him.
