Former Cardinals hurler Todd Wellemeyer has called it a career.
Rehabbing in the Cubs minor league system from a hip problem that has kept him out of action since last season when he made 13 appearances for the Giants, Wellemeyer was pounded in his only start at Class AAA Iowa.
He gave up eight hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings while walking two and striking out two. Apparently, Wellemeyer grew frustrated with the way his hip was responding to treatment and decided his career was finished at 32.
He spent eight seasons in the majors with the Cubs, Marlins, Royals, Cardinals and Giants, compiling a 32-34 record with a 4.83 ERA. His best season came with St. Louis is 2008 when he was 13-11 with a 3.71 ERA.
