On this date in Cardinals History: May 11, 1966

On this date 45 years ago Busch Memorial Stadium -- aka Busch Memorial Stadium and later known as Busch Stadium II -- opened for business with a 4-3 St. Louis victory over the visiting Braves.

Lou Brock's base hit in the 12th inning drove home Alex Johnson with the deciding run. Right fielder Mike Shannon led the offense with three hits, a run scored and an RBI while shortstop Jerry Buchek collected two safeties while scoring and driving in a run.

Ray Washburn started and gave the Birds seven strong innings with five hits and two runs allowed. Don Dennis pitched a third of an inning to get his first victory of the season.

The Cardinals were 9-14 at their old home on North Grand Avenue before the move downtown where they were 74-65. The Cardinals beat the Cubs 8-0 in their last game at the old ballpark.
