Laird's finger broken by pitch

The Cardinals have annouced that back-up catcher Gerald Laird has a broken index finger after he was struck by a pitch Sunday while attempting to bunt.

No word yet on how long he is expected to be unavailable or who his replacement might be.

Bryan Anderson, a good hitting catcher with questionable defensive skills, came up last year when Jason LaRue was injured during the scrum with the Reds in Cincinnati. He'd be my guess because of his experience although both he and Tony Cruz are already on the 40-man roster.

But Anderson has been on the short end the catching rotation in Memphis, amassing only 70 at bats compared to 95 for Cruz. He's hitting .214 with no homers and five runs batted in.

There was no doubt the injury was going to be bad when the training staff tried to pull off Laird's batting glove. He winced and turned away as if he didn't want to see what was underneath as the glove came off.
