Former Cardinal Joe Mather has rejected Atlanta's latest effort to send him to the minors, opting to become a free agent instead.
Mather hit .213 with one homer in 36 games with the Braves in 2011. He had 23 strikeouts in 75 at bats.
He cleared waivers earlier this season and was demoted to Class AAA Gwinnett where Mather hit .258 with four homers in 18 games before being summoned back to the big league club.
Mather is capable of playing all three outfield spots and the infield corners. But he's got a big, loopy swing and has never been able to hit consistently at the big league level. He's a .228 lifetime hitter in parts of three big league season.
