On This Date in Cardinals History: July 14, 1994

On this date 17 years ago Cardinals Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith became MLB's all-time assists leader when his four helpers against Colorado propelled him past Luis Aparicio and into first place amongst shortstops.

Rabbit Maranville, who played for the Redbirds in two of his 23 seasons, is the only player in major league history to record more assists with 8,967 to Ozzie's 8,375. But, while 7,354 of Maranville's assists came at shortstop, 1,608 of them came as a second baseman and five came as a third baseman.

All of Smith's 2,511 major league games were played at shortstop.
