On this date 50 years ago former Cardinals first baseman Bill White ties the major league record for hits in back-to-back double headers with 14.

Only July 17, 1961 White collects four hits in five at bats in the first game against the Cubs, a 10-6 St. Louis win. In the second game he again goes 4-for-5 to lead the Redbirds to an 8-5 win.

In a pair of games July 18, 1961, White goes 3-for-4 including a two-run homer in the first match-up, an 8-3 victory over the Cubs. In the second contest, white again goes 3-for-4 with a triple to lead the Redbirds to a 7-5 win.

Game two of the four matches between the Cardinals and Cubs was won by St. Louis starting pitcher Ernie Broglio. But Lou Brock, the player that was famously traded to the Birds for their hurler, wouldn't make his major league debut with Chicago for another six weeks or so.
