Cardinals look to improve up the middle

In his latest update, Fox Sports reporter Ken Rosenthal tweets that the Cardinals have turned their focus to acquiring middle infield help, specifically at shortstop.

The club is apparently unhappy with both the defense and the offense provided lately by incumbent Ryan Theriot.

A .266 hitter overall with a .310 on base percentage, which is pretty lousy for a guy who was supposed to be the spark at the top of the batting order, he's hitting only .159 in the month of July. And lately all he seems to do is hit lasy fly balls. Not a good trend for a guy who has one homer on the season.

Theriot has been on a disturbing downward trend dating back to last season. Despite a strong start that saw him hit .316 through April, Theriot is only a .256 hitter dating back to this point of last season.
