On this date 34 years ago, Cardinals outfielder Lou Brock steals two bases -- the first his 891st to tie Ty Cobb for the all-time lead in sacks swiped. The second, his 892nd, moves Brock into first place all by himself.
The Base Burglar would go on to steal 938 bases before calling it a career after the 1979 season. That would stand as the all-time record until Rickey Henderson broke the mark. Brock still holds the National League record for most bases stolen in a carrer and in a season, 118. In 1967 Brock became the first person to steal 50 bases and hit 20 home runs in the same season.
A .293 career hitter who led the Senior Circuit in stolen bases eight times, Brock was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985.
