The competition between the Cardinals and the Brewers might not have to wait until the beginning of the 2012 season.
According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Milwaukee is eyeballing Redbirds free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal.
The Cardinals have drug their feet on Furcal as they wait for the Albert Pujols situation to play out. Furcal said at the end of the season that he understood that Pujols would take priority and that he was willing to wait. Personally, I like Furcal and thought that he did a much better job anchoring the infield than any St. Louis shortstop since Edgar Renteria. But I would rather have Tyler Greene and Albert Pujols than Tyler Greene and Furcal on the 2012 roster.
I don't see an aging Furcal as a huge difference maker for the Brewers whose offense will be weakened considerably by the loss of Prince Fielder.
