Cardinals announce coaching changes

Jose Oquendo and Mark McGwire will be back with the Cardinals coaching staff in 2012, the team announced Wednesday.

Oquendo, who was a candidate to replace retired skipper Tony La Russa, has agreed to come back in his previous role as third base coach. McGwire, who led the Cardinals offense to be one of the most potent attacks in the National League last season, will be back in his familiar role as well.

Also coming back are pitching coach Dave Duncan, which had previously been announced and bullpen coach Derek Lilliquist. Assistant hitting coach Mike Aldrete will be promoted to be the bench coach replacing Joe Pettini, another candidate for La Russa's old job. Former minor league manager Chris Mahoney will replace Dave McKay as first base coach.
