The Cardinals couldn't have asked for a better start to the season. They collected three hits in the first inning -- including two with two outs from Lance Berkman and David Freese -- to push across two runs to start the game.
After a one-two-three bottom of the first from St. Louis starter Kyle Lohse, the Birds got back on the gas pedal in the top of the second with Daniel Descalso scoring from second base on a Rafeal Furcal single to make the score 3-1.
The Marlins hit the ball hard three times in the bottom of the second frame. But the first ball died in the spacious centerfield. The second was lined to Carlos Beltran who didn't have to move to catch it in right field and the final out was a liner to Furcal.
