Is Chris Carpenter going to ever pitch again? Is Adam Wainwright suffering a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery?
One has to wonder thanks to a Fox Sports report in which Ken Rosenthal says that the Redbirds have recently got back in touch with Roy Oswalt's people to inquire about the former Astros ace's availability/desire to pitch.
If Carpenter is on schedule for a June return and Wainwright is just working his way through some dead arm issues, there is no need -- and no place -- for Oswalt on the St. Louis roster. Lance Lynn has been pitching great in Carpenter's stead and all of the other St. Louis starters have been very solid with the exception of Wainwright.
If Waino is healthy, the only way for him to build up his arm strength and get back to 100 percent is to pitch through his problems. Of course, if he has re-injured his elbow, that's another story.
There is, of course, the possibility that Oswalt's agent is just trying to drum up some action by claiming the Cardinals -- and the Red Sox -- are still interested.
But if the Cardinals have called on Oswalt, a tip of my cap to them for staying on top of things and doing everything they can to remain competitive. it wasn't long ago that 40 percent of the rotation blew up in the middle of a pennant chase and the Birds tried to make do with a cast of has been and never will be pitchers.
