Jon Jay nears a return to the majors

Is that the sound of a cavalry bugle I hear off in the distance?

Cardinals centerfielder and offensive spark plug Jon Jay had a huge game Wednesday for Class AAA Memphis as he rehabs in the minor leagues.

Jay, who batted in the lead-off spot, collected a homer and a triple against Oklahoma City. He scored three runs and drove in three more in the Redbirds' 13-9 win.

Out for the second time because of a separated shoulder suffered when he crashed into the outfield wall trying to track down a fly ball, Jay was hitting .343 with a pair of homers in 27 games with St. Louis when he went back on the shelf.

It's no coincidence that the St. Louis offense has stumbled without Jay in the order. His replacements in the line-up, Shane Robinson and Adron Chambers, have hit .257 and .250 respectively.
