Still smarting from having 14 runs hung on them by the weak-hitting Pirates, the Cardinals have demoted relievers Sam Freeman and Eduardo Sanchez to Class AAA Memphis.
In their places, the Redbirds have recalled Maikel Cleto and called Barret Browning up to make his major league debut.
Cleto allowed nine hits in five innings pitched in an earlier call up this season. He struck out six and walked one while compiling a 5.40 ERA. With Class AAA Memphis, Cleto allowed 24 hits in 32 innings of work. He had 41 strikeouts and nine walks while compiling a 3.94 ERA.
Browning, 27, has allowed 25 hits in 38 innings and struck out 36 hitters while walking 18. He's got a 1.89 ERA this year and is 6-5 with a 4.47 ERA in three years of work in Class AAA, last year with Salt Lake City.
The Cardinals picked up the Brunswick, Ga. native following his release in spring training by the Angels.
