Molina and Lynn selected as Cardinals reserves. Holliday omitted

There were a few surprises, as usual when MLB released the All-Star Game rosters Sunday.

The Cardinals had four guys either voted onto the roster or chosen by former St. Louis skipper Tony La Russa. While the number of Cardinals players isn't the odd thing, it's the individuals.

La Russa picked struggling starting pitcher, who is near the top of the NL in wins, but who has been pretty terrible his last three appearances. Meanwhile, slugging outfielder Matt Holliday, who has a .307 batting average with 12 homers and 48 RBIs, was left off.

Here are the NL starters as voted in by fans:

C - Buster Posey (SF)

1B -Joey Votto (CIN)

2B - Dan Uggla (ATL)

3B - Pablo Sandova (SF)

SS - Rafael Furcal (STL)

OF - Melky Cabrera in the outfield.

OF - Carlos Beltran (STL)

OF - Matt Kemp (LA)

The reserves chosen by MLB players:

C - Yadier Molina (STL)

1B - Bryan LaHair (CHI)

2B - Jose Altuve (HOU)

SS - Starlin Castro (CHI)

3B - David Wright (NY)

OF - Ryan Braun (MIL)

OF - Carlos Gonzalez (COL)

OF - Andrew McCutchen (PIT)

SP - Matt Cain (SF)

SP - R.A. Dickey (NY)

SP - Lance Lynn (STL)

SP - Gio Gonzalez (WAS)

SP - Stephen Strasburg (WAS)

RP - Aroldis Chapman (CIN)

RP - Joel Hanrahan (PIT)

RP - Craig Kimbrel (ATL)

... and the manager's reserve choices:

C - Carlos Ruiz (PHI)

SS -  Ian Desmond (WAS)

OF - Jay Bruce (CIN)

OF - Giancarlo Stanton (MIA)

SP - Cole Hamels (PHI)

RP - Jonathan Papelbon (PHI)

SP - Clayton Kershaw (LA)

SP - Wade Miley (AZ)

RP - Huston Street (SD)

I wonder if La Russa figures that Matt Kemp, who is questionable to play in the Mid-Summer Classic because of leg injuries, will drop out and open a spot for Holliday who was passed by other outfielders he's outplayed on the field and out-polled in the fan balloting but they were selected over him because every team needs to get a player on the All-Star roster.
