A reader has filled me in on something I wrote about last week.
I reported that the Reds celebrated on the field after clinching the National League Central Division title with a trophy that looked sort of like a low rent version of the Stanley Cup. Being that I can never remember another team getting a trophy for winning a division title -- and the fact that there was nothing anyplace on the internet to indicate the practice of giving a trophy for a division title had been adopted -- I wondered if the Reds presented the trophy to themselves.
According to the reader, whose name I neglected to get, one of the Reds players purchased the trophy at an antique shop earlier this season as a motivational device for the team. And when they came through with the division title, they took it out on the field to mark the occasion.
