According to multiple reports, the Cardinals are interested in Giants middle infielder Marco Scutaro.
The 37-year-old free agent hit .306 last year for San Francisco. He can play second base, shortstop and third base. But, although most of his career games are at short, he's been primarily a second baseman for the last two years.
Scutaro has reportedly given the Giants right of first refusal on any offers he gets. And San Francisco is said to be serious about bringing him back. So the Redbirds would likely have to overpay to get him. And Scutaro probably would be more interested in starting at second base than in handling a reserve role. The Cardinals could use him to fill second in 2013 as they wait for prospect Kolten Wong to finish his development in Memphis. But he would so serve as an insurance policy if starting shortstop Rafael Furcal is injured.
