I'm terribly saddened to learn that former Reds centerfielder Ryan Freel took his own life.
Freel had a short career that seemed to end suddenly. But he really got the maximum out of his talent while he played. There may have been more talented players on his clubs. But he never got out-hustled. And if there is any Reds player I would have liked to see play for St. Louis, it's him.
I have no idea what was going on in Freel's life to make him want to give it all up. But he was only 36 with a wife and three young kids, so it seemed that he had an awful lot to live for.
My thoughts are with his family.
