When Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak announced earlier this week that Chris Carpenter was unlikely to pitch in 2013, the big right hander was conspicuously absent from the press conference.
It was said at the time that Carpenter was still seeking medical information about his pitching shoulder, which is week and painful because of a nerve issue that has plagued the 2005 Cy Young Award winner's career, before he made a public statement.
On Friday the Cardinals announced that Carpenter is ready to address his health. He is expected to do so Monday, shedding light on whether he thinks he'll be able to continue his career at some point.
The Redbirds don't seem to be very optimistic about that idea. Mozeliak said during the initial announcement that Carpenter told him he is worried about his quality of life after his career if he pushes things too far with his shoulder.
