Reds sign former Cardinals OF/3B Joe Mather

Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty has continued his trend of signing former St. Louis Cardinals players.

But it seems the picking are getting slimmer.

This time he has inked outfielder and third baseman Joe Mather, 30, and assigned him to Class AA Pensacola.

Mather, who last played in the major leagues in 2012 with the Chicago Cubs when he hit .209 in 225 at-bats, was released by the Philadelphia Phillies in spring training. Since then he has been playing in the independent Atlantic League where he batted .271 with two homers in 13 games for Lancaster.

A Cardinals third-round draft choice in 2001, Mather played with St. Louis in 2008 and 2010. He's also spent time in the major leagues with the Atlanta Braves. He's a .219 career major league hitter with 15 home runs.

Other one-time Cardinals signed by the former St. Louis GM include Scott Rolen, Jim Edmonds, Jason Isringhausen, Miguel Cairo, Mike Lincoln and Russ Springer.
