Cardinals demote Victor Marte, replace him with Maikel Cleto

In a move that is less than surprising, the Cardinals on Wednesday have shipped out relief pitcher Victor Marte following his loss in the team's marathon game Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In his place tonight in the bullpen will be another imprecise right handed reliever Maikel Cleto who was called up from Class AAA Memphis.

Cleto is an uninspiring 2-2 with a 5.67 ERA. In 39 2/3 innings, Cleto has struck out 39 hitters... And he's walked 38.

Hopefully Cleto's stay will be even shorter than Marte's. Jake Westbrook made his first rehab start Tuesday in Springfield and is set to make another this weekend. If all goes well, hopefully he'll be activated and inserted into the major league rotation.

Then either Joe Kelly or Tyler Lyons can go to the bullpen to stabilize the situation there.

Marte was 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in his latest stint with the Cardinals.
