Former Cardinals IF David Bell to join club's coaching staff

The St. Louis Cardinals have hired former third baseman David Bell to be the club's new assistant hitting coach, according to NBC.

It's an interesting hire on one level because Bell was a .257 career hitter with a .320 on-base percentage. But Bell, who previously served as the manager of the Class AAA Louisville Bats, is an up and coming baseball mind who may in the near future become a major league skipper.

Last season he was the third base coach of the Chicago Cubs.

Bell played for the Cardinals from 1995-98 and hit .225 with four homers. He also played in the major leagues for Cleveland, Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco and Milwaukee.

Bell inherits the coaching spot that was vacated when previous assistant hitting coach Bengie Molina left the Redbirds to become the hitting coach for the Texas Rangers.
