The St. Louis Cardinals have signed right handed relief pitcher Pat Neshek to a minor league contract, according to ESPN.
Neshek is a submarine style pitcher. The righty equivalent of the ubiquitous Left Handed One Out Guy. He pitched for Oakland last year and racked up 40 1/3 innings while holding right handed hitters to a .219 batting average against. Lefties, however, batted .315 against him. He gave up a remarkable six home runs in his limited exposure. Four of them were surrendered to left handed batters even though they clocked only 54 at-bats against the 33 year old hurler.
I'm curious if this is a move to sign some Class AAA depth or if the Cardinals think Neshek can be used as an effective Seth Maness type in the majors in 2014.
