The St. Louis Cardinals Saturday game against the Milwaukee Brewers would be a good one for the Redbirds to win.
While I would be satisfied with a split against on the road against the Brewers, there's going to be a lot of pressure on them to win Sunday. If they win today, they're guaranteed to leave town with at least a three-game lead in the National League Central. But if they lose, their four-game lead after the opener Thursday will dwindle to two. And if they lose Sunday it will be one.
All the pressure will be on Milwaukee Sunday if the Redbirds can win on Saturday. The best the Brewers could hope for is to waste four games at home against the team they need to catch by ending the series in the same position in which they started. But if they lose the series... Well, it could be devastating to their post seasons aspirations.
It would also be nice to win Saturday because Milwaukee is coming off a nine-game losing streak. The Cardinals need to keep them from getting hot by knocking them right back down. Likewise, the Redbirds are coming off a six-game winning streak. It would be a shame to give up what they've accomplished on their recent push by going into a funk.
People like to say all year long that it's a long season, a marathon instead of a sprint. But this is September. That's overwith. We've reached the sprint and the Cardinals need to do whatever they can to pour on the steam and pull away now.
