Report: Taveras was "driving very, very fast" when fatal accident occurred

Reports out of the Dominican Republic indicate that police don't believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor when St. Louis Cardinals outfielder lost control of his car Sunday night, causing a crash that claimed his life and that of his girlfriend.

But, according to celebrity gossip website TMZ.com, Dominican police said that Taveras was "driving very, very fast" in a heavy downpour when he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree.

Apparently, Taveras and his girlfriend weren't the first people who lost their lives crashing into that particular tree. Reports indicate another driver was fatally injured when he hit the same tree during rainy conditions less than a year ago.
