I guess the scouts must have been busy when Justin Masterson pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals.
According to ESPN, at least five teams are seriously interested in the big righty who was 3-3 with a .704 ERA in nine starts with St. Louis in 2014 after going 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA for the Cleveland Indians earlier in the year.
Masterson won 14 games with a 3.45 ERA in 2013 and, I suppose, there is a sense that his balky knee was to blame for a sub par 2014. But I found it to be startling how hard and how often Masterson was hit last year. He doesn't seem like a guy who had much margin for error. So, while I am not necessarily surprised that a team or two would offer him a one-year make-good deal, I am taken aback by the thought that he would be at the center of a bidding war.
Several reports indicate that Masterson has more than one offer for two years on the table.
The Cardinals, over the past few years, have been king of the dumpster divers. So I find it to be somewhat curious that, if he's healthy, the Redbirds have seemingly expressed no interest in bringing Masterson back.
