If there was any hope on the part of the St. Louis Cardinals front office that one of the top free agent pitchers on the market this winter would fall through the cracks, it seems to have evaporated.
According to ESPN, now that the Los Angeles Dodgers have become involved in the Jon Lester derby, the bidding is expected to eclipse $150 million for the SECOND most desirable pitcher on the market.
I wonder what that will make makes Max Scherzer worth. And, even if the Redbirds were willing to pay that amount, how could they pay another hurler a time and a half what they're paying their ace, Adam Wainwright?
LA, the Chicago Cubs, the Boston Red Sox and the San Francisco Giants have all been reported to be finalists for the services of Lester.
