Fireworks light up Glen Carbon picnic

Glen Carbon will top off its annual homecoming Friday and Saturday with fireworks at 10 both nights.

Homecoming hours are 5 p.m. to midnight Friday and 4 p.m. to midnight Saturday.

Carnival rides and games, Smash-a-Car, laser tag, beer gardens and food and drink vendors will up and running throughout. Both days will have Sparky the Clown and balloon artist Sammy J from 5 to 8 p.m.; the Mississippi Valley Barbershop Chorus, at 5:30 p.m.; and Cindy’s Petting Zoo.

On Friday, a Budweiser Clydesdale will be on hand from 6 to 8 p.m. (Bring your camera.) Well Hungarians will perform from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m.

On Saturday, a 5K run starts at 8 a.m., followed by a 5-mile run at 8:15. A parade with Fredbird and the St. Louis Rams Cheerleaders is at 5 p.m. Dirty Muggs provides the music from 7 to 11 p.m.

June Jamboree

New Baden’s June Jamboree is Friday and Saturday at Village Park.

Food stands and carnival rides open at 6 p.m. Friday. Rains have cancelled the Stock ATV Pull and Garden Tractor Pull, both scheduled for 7 p.m. Avery Hill will provide the music at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, the 16th annual 5K Walk/Run starts at 8 a.m. The parade is at 5 p.m. Food and beer stands open at 5 p.m. and rides open at 6. A truck pull is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with free admission; pit pass is $10. A deejay will provide the music beginning at 8 p.m.

Caseyville Fireman’s Picnic

A parade kicks off the two-day Caseyville Fireman’s Picnic at 6:30 p.m. Friday. There will be carnival rides (save $6 with advance tickets a First Collinsville Bank in Caseyville and Caseyville City Hall), games, food and drink vendors both nights.

Edwardsville gardens

The 16th annual Garden Tour on Saturday will feature seven residential gardens in Edwardsville and Glen Carbon, plus the gardens at the historic 1820 Stephenson House.

The tour, sponsored by the Universtity of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners, benefits the Madison County Extension Education Foundation.

A master gardener will discuss container gardening at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Stephenson House, 409 S. Buchanan St. in Edwardsville. A raffle of exceptional container gardens, assembled by area retailers and master gardeners also is at the Stephenson House.

The gardens may be toured at the leisure of ticket holders. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 the day of the tour. Tickets may be purchased at Bank of Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Alton and Granite City; Creekside Gardens in Collinsville; Edwardsville Public Library; Glen Carbon Centennial Library; Market Basket in Edwardsville, Godfrey and Troy; and University of Illinois Extension offices in Collinsville and Waterloo.
