The Rolling Stones Are Getting in on World Cup Fun

The Rolling Stones are well aware that the World Cup is in full swing, and they’re getting in on the action.

The classic rock band has kicked off what they’ve dubbed as The Rolling Stones Streaming World Cup, which puts the top 30 countries that stream the band’s music on Spotify against each other to see who wins.

The tournament will run for the next four weeks, so fans have plenty of time to get in on the fun. Fans in those countries may stream any track from The Stones’ catalog, and every single stream gets a point for their country.

What’s funny is that each of the band’s members, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, are serving as team captains for 10 teams.

So, countries are supposed to try to get as many points as possible, and the country that earns the most points will be the Stones Top Streaming Nation. What an honor, right?

Meanwhile, “Foreign Tongues,” the Rolling Stones’ 25th studio album, is out on Friday, July 10. Every time the guys put out new music, it feels like another reminder that rock and roll doesn’t have an expiration date. They have nothing left to prove, yet they keep showing up with fresh songs instead of simply living off the past.

That’s part of the appeal. The records may not sound like they’re trying to recreate 1972, and they shouldn’t. They sound like a band still curious enough to plug in and see what happens. In an era built on nostalgia, there’s something satisfying about watching legends refuse to become museum pieces. Long may that attitude last.
