‘Anything Goes,’ ‘Edwin Drood’ lead St. Louis Theater Circle nominations

Two musicals topped this year’s St. Louis Theater Circle Awards nominations, announced today. Stages St. Louis’ snappy production of Cole Porter’s classic “Anything Goes” garnered nine, while Stray Dog Theatre’s presentation of the madcap “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” earned seven.

The three most cited plays, each receiving six nominations, included Edward Albee’s blistering dark comedy “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” by St. Louis Actors’ Studio, LBJ’s landmark moment-in-time drama “All the Way” and “Safe House,” a riveting tale of free-born blacks in pre-Civil War Kentucky, both presented by The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis.

Overall, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis led with 30 mentions while The Muny garnered 15 and Stray Dog Theatre received 14 in nominations for excellence in 2015 regional professional theater.

Fifty shows from 21 companies and 117 individuals were recognized for their work last year.

Awards will be given in 31 categories at the fourth annual ceremony on Monday, March 21, at the Skip Viragh Center for the Performing Arts, which is located at Chaminade College Preparatory School, 425 S. Lindbergh Blvd., in St. Louis.

Six women were among the 10 directors nominated for work in comedies and dramas, including Carlyle native Kirsten Wylder for helming the daffy “The 39 Steps” at Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble.

Opera productions received six nominations, the most to date - five for Opera Theatre of St. Louis, including three for regional premiere of “Emmeline,” and one for Union Avenue Opera.

Belleville’s own Rob Lippert, now of O’Fallon, earned three nominations for his set designs in musicals - two for Stray Dog Theatre (”Dogfight” and “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”) and one for New Line Theatre (”Heathers”). He tied with sound designer Rusty Wandall as the most cited individuals.

Other metro-east natives recognized included Paige Brubeck, formerly of Millstadt, for her work with partner Evan Sult in Sleepy Kitty, sound designers for “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” at Upstream Theatre, and performer Anna Skidis, who grew up in Fairview Heights and graduated from SIUEdwardsville, Best Actress in a Musical for “Heathers.”

Local performers were part of nominated ensembles, including Belleville native Whit Reichert, who played Eli Whitney in Stages’ “Anything Goes,” Mike Wells of Belleville and Kevin Connelly of Edwardsville in Stray Dog’s “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” and Jamie Lynn Eros of Belleville in the cast of the comedy “Wild Oats” by Shakespeare St. Louis.

Nominations were revealed Jan. 29 on KWMU’s “St. Louis on the Air” by theater critics Judy Newmark of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Lynn Venhaus for the Belleville News-Democrat, two of the group’s founding members in 2012.

The awards ceremony will be filmed by HEC-TV, and can be accessed on Charter channel 989 and U-Verse 99 that evening, and at www.hectv.org.
