Everything to Know About Ryan Gosling's New Film ‘Project Hail Mary'

Fans are gearing up for Ryan Gosling's new film Project Hail Mary based on the book by Andy Weir.

The movie - scheduled to premiere in March 2026 - follows a man named Ryland Grace (Gosling) who wakes up on an interstellar spacecraft with no memory of how he got there.

"I was sent the manuscript from the greatest sci-fi mind of our time," Gosling shared at the San Diego Comic Con in July 2025, referring to Weir, who was sitting next to him. "I knew it would be brilliant because it's Andy. But nothing could prepare me for what he came up with this time."

Gosling noted that his work on Project Hail Mary "took [him] places [he] had ever been" and "showed [him] things [he] had never seen."

"As heartbreaking as it was funny," he added. "I was not just blown away, but I was also overwhelmed because this story is about a scared guy who has to do something impossible. Now I was a scared guy who had to do something impossible to try to turn this into a movie."

Based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary follows the story of a man named Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) who wakes up on an interstellar aircraft with amnesia. He eventually starts to piece together parts of his identity, including that he was a teacher at a middle school who was recruited in search of a mission to save the world.

Who Is Directing ‘Project Hail Mary'?

Project Hail Mary is directed by filmmaking duo Phillip Anderson Lord and Christopher Robert Miller, whose previous projects include 21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. It is their first film they have done in the last 12 years following the completion of 2014's 22 Jump Street.

"[They] have a singular vision, which is weird because there's two of them," Ryan Gosling shared in April 2025 at CinemaCon, referring to the directors.

Is There a Trailer for ‘Project Hail Mary'?

In the beginning of the June 2025 trailer, Ryan Gosling's character, Ryland Grace - who has a long brown beard and shoulder length hair - reveals that he just woke up from a coma in outer space and is "several light-years" away from his apartment.

"I'm not an astronaut," he says over and over before the trailer reveals that Ryland is a teacher at a middle school and has a doctorate in molecular biology. He was recruited by a space task force to research why stars, including the sun, are dying. The stars were allegedly infected by something deadly, with the exception of one - and Ryland's job is to find out why.

According to the trailer, Ryland was sent into space on a "hail mary" mission to figure out how to stop the infection from spreading and causing all life forms to go extinct. He expresses some hesitancy despite being told he is the planet's last hope at finding a solution to impending doom.

"I understand the stakes, I do," Ryland said. "But my place is in the classroom."

After Ryland is told if he doesn't go to space that he'll die along with the rest of the planet, he is seen stepping into a space suit after signing onto the mission.

At the end of the trailer, which is set to Harry Styles' song "Sign of the Times," Ryland says he "met an alien" and is seen teaching the alien how to do a thumbs-up.
