East St. Louis man charged in shooting death of Centreville man

The 21-year-old man who police say is responsible for the shooting death of a 25-year-old that occurred in Centreville on Wednesday was charged Monday with first degree murder.

Sammie Swift, from Building 10 C in the Gomper Homes in East St. Louis, was charged with first degree murder by St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly. He is currently in police custody at the St. Clair County Jail. Bail for Swift is set at $750,000.

The arrest warrant said Swift is charged with murder/intent to kill or injure. He, along with a male who is a minor, allegedly and without lawful justification and with intent to kill or do great bodily harm to DeAngelo Oliver shot him about the body with a firearm thereby causing his death.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Matt Weller said Centreville police received a call reporting shots fired, man down at 4763 Piggott Ave. “When officers arrived at the location, they found Oliver outside of the home on the ground. He had been shot multiple times,” Weller said. “The investigation led us to the suspect.”

Asked whether police knew the motive, Weller said, “We believe there was some kind of altercation between the two men prior to the shooting.”

Oliver lived at the address where police found his lifeless body.
