McKendree removes interim tag from Guffey

Mikal Guffey, who guided the McKendree University women’s golf team this past spring, has been installed as the head coach of the program moving forward.

McKendree director of athletics Chuck Brueggemann has announced that the interim tag has been removed from Guffey’s title.

“Sometimes it is difficult to step into a coaching role mid-season, but Mikal did so with positive results,” said Brueggemann. “He helped bring stability to our women’s golf program and our ladies performed consistently throughout the spring. Mikal has unified the team, and we have high hopes for what the future holds under his leadership.”

Despite playing an abbreviated 2016 spring schedule, the McKendree women’s golf team turned in a pair of top-10 performances. The Bearcats rallied during the final two rounds of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship to post an 11th-place finish.

“It is a privilege and honor to represent McKendree University as the women’s head golf coach,” said Guffey. “I am extremely proud of the young women currently on our team. They are exceptional student-athletes and I could not be more thrilled about our incoming recruits. The future of our program is now and I am eager for the 2016-17 season to begin.”

In addition to his duties with the McKendree women’s golf program, Guffey will continue to serve as the director of golf operations for The Hills at McKendree University in Lebanon. Since March 2014, Guffey has overseen all aspects of the facility, including the day-to-day operation and management of the course.
