A new dispensary brings cannabis, edibles and boutique merch to Belleville

Belleville welcomed its second cannabis dispensary earlier this month with the opening of Market 96 Neighborhood Dispensary.

Located at 7300 Twin Pyramid Parkway near the intersection of Illinois 15 and South 74th Street, the shop carries cannabis in multiple forms — flower, pre-rolls, vapes, edibles, extracts, pills, tinctures and topicals — in a variety of brands. Tools and other gear such as torches and lighters, papers, pipes and rolling trays are also available.

Product sales vary day by day, but “flower is always key,” said Dre Trobradovic, director of retail for Market 96.

Customers have brand preferences, she said. The shop carries brands that customers may recognize and others that may be less familiar to them, providing the opportunity to try and learn about new products.

Gummies are a common edible, but Market 96 offers others, like cookies, popcorn and chocolate, said Joe Thompson, general manager.

Infused drinks also stand out, according to Andrea Oliver, assistant general manager.

Cannabis feels more readily available than it actually is, said Trobradovic, listing vape shops as an example. But these are not licensed dispensaries, she added, and the differences in the products show that.

“We’re here to provide the real thing,” she said.

Advisers are always present on the sales floor. Customers can use kiosks for browsing and ordering.

“Illinois customers are trained to use kiosks,” said Trobradovic, adding that they’re often used for demonstration purposes and to help customers learn about individual products and make their selections.

The shop opened on March 12, but with the number of displays and items on offer, it seems like it’s been there longer.

Trobradovic said the goal at Market 96 is to create an experience for customers, not just with the cannabis products but with other merchandise as well.

In addition to cannabis and artisanal goods, Market 96 also has a “munchies” section, where they sell local and international snacks.

Customers will find more than cannabis at Market 96

Among the cannabis products and paraphernalia, the shop has many other reasons to pay a visit.

They want customers to feel welcome, comfortable and valued.

“People are welcome to come and hang out,” said Trobradovic.

A “munchies” display placed near the checkout counter is filled with small bags of uniquely-flavored potato chips, snack mixes, cookies, candies and beverages. Trail mixes designed to pair with different cannabis strains are also available.

The shop floor is like a specialty boutique and offers a “more familiar shopping experience” for the customers, said Trobradovic.

Market 96 works with multiple vendors including local artisans to create some of the fun merchandise available in the shop.

Products include jewelry, clothing and accessories, scented candles, books, beverage coaster sets, fun socks, stickers, unique beverage vessels, and can koozies, which have gone over so well that there was only one left at the time of the interview.

“The ladies of Belleville love (our) stuff,” Oliver said of the merchandise.

They even have fun items for pets, including toys, bandanas and matching sets of socks for pets and their people.

For those new to or curious about cannabis, Trobradovic’s advice is to “Come in with an open mind.”

“There’s a lot of info (about cannabis) out there,” said Thompson. “Learn what you can” before coming to shop.

Cannabis dispensaries in Belleville

The Belleville City Council approved plans for the west Belleville cannabis dispensary in May 2022.

The permit was granted to Washington, D.C.-based Blounts & Moore, which holds licenses for six dispensaries in Illinois, according to a previous Belleville News-Democrat report.

In addition to the Belleville location, Market 96 has stores in Chicago and Oswego. Trobradovic said that plans for three more locations are in the works, including a new build in Cairo and two more stores for the Chicago area.

Part of the plans for Market 96 included a cultivation center. Trobradovic said that this is still in the works. Due to structural logistics and related funding, different options for the center are still being considered.

In August 2022, the city approved a second marijuana store for the east side of Belleville. Mystic Greenz soft opened in late October 2024 in a former bank located at 360 S. Green Mount Road.

Based on an ordinance passed in 2019, the city can collect a 3% sales tax from each dispensary’s sales in addition to the regular sales tax.
