Dad Plays With His Kids in the Park-Two Hours Later Life Changes Forever
A dad of three was enjoying time at the park with his kids when, hours later, his family's worst nightmare unfolded.
On April 13, 2025, David Cromie and his wife, Sophie, 37, took their children to a local park in Scarva, Northern Ireland.
The family spent about an hour at the park, where David happily went down the slides and pushed swings with their children: Kassi, 6, and 1-year-old Kasper. The couple also share 12-year-old Karlee.
Sophie remembered him being on “great form,” with no complaints or signs that anything was wrong.
After heading home for Kasper's nap, David did what he always did-settling the baby before changing into his farm clothes. He had noticed sheep had escaped into the wrong field earlier that day and took the quadbike out to fix some fencing. Sophie stayed inside, making a short video about their wholesome morning. Around 20 minutes later, David called.
“He went straight into asking me, ‘Where are the kids?'” Sophie told Newsweek. “It actually made me nervous, thinking Kassi had snuck out or something.”
David told Sophie he didn't feel right and sounded increasingly confused, unable to remember what he had been doing or where he had been moments earlier.
Sophie ran down the yard with the farm dog to find him. When David reached the house, he collapsed to his knees, disoriented and frightened.
“I was taking all his weight while walking up to the house, and he was still tripping over himself,” Sophie said. “It was clear something was very wrong.”
David, she added, is extremely fit-he hikes mountains, bikes, plays soccer and clocks up around 20,000 steps a day on the farm-so struggling to walk was completely out of character.
Despite initially resisting medical help, David was rushed to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry and later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where specialist scans confirmed he had suffered a bleed on the brain, with an official diagnosis of a non-aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Thankfully, doctors believed the bleed had stopped, and, after five days, David was allowed home.
The months that followed were emotionally brutal. David couldn't work or drive and tired easily. Complications during a later angiogram led to a ministroke, though he has since recovered fully.
Sophie posted a video on TikTok (@sophwellieswheelsweewans) of that fateful day in April 2025. A year on, the family is cautiously hopeful.
“Looking back, what I remember the most is how the man I see as our protector and provider was so scared, and it terrified me,” Sophie said.
The ordeal has changed how the family lives-slowing down, prioritizing time together, and making memories. This year, they bought a caravan to do just that.
“Here’s to the future and keeping the past where it belongs,” Sophie said.
