32 Years Ago, Rock's Biggest Stars Reunited for a Concert the World Will Never Forget
On April 20, 1992, the music world came together to honor one of the most iconic frontmen of all time with a star-studded concert that immediately went down in rock history.
The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert took place at Wembley Stadium in London just five months after the Queen frontman had died from an AIDS-related illness. While all 72,000 tickets sold out in just three days, the event was broadcast to the world and watched by a reported 1 billion viewers.
The concert was organized by Mercury's surviving bandmates, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon, and featured surprise appearances from countless rock legends who had known the singer both professionally and personally.
With appearances from David Bowie, Axl Rose, Paul Young, Roger Daltrey, and countless others, May described the event as "an exit in the true style to which [Freddie] was accustomed." (via Louder)
Mercury's bandmates worked together with Elton John and Elizabeth Taylor to curate the perfect lineup of performers that could honor Mercury's legacy and capture the multifaceted spirit of his music.
The concert also raised a reported £20 million in earnings, which was used to found the Mercury Phoenix Trust, a charitable organization that funds AIDS research.
The event opened with sets from Metallica, Extreme, Def Leppard, Bob Geldof, Spinal Tap, and Guns n' Roses, before the remaining members of Queen took to the stage for a 25 track-long performance of original material and covers with some of rock music's biggest stars.
Robert Plant joined the band for songs such as "Innuendo" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". David Bowie made an appearance for "Under Pressure" and "Heroes". George Michael performed "39" and "Somebody to Love". Perhaps most memorably, Elton John and Axl Rose teamed up for a legendary cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody" that is still referenced as one of the most iconic moments in rock history today.
