Watching out for our pets' food is no joking matter. Just as with humans, it's important to note the type of food and treats we give, to make sure they're only getting the very best natural ingredients possible. While brands have stepped up to provide the very best for our furry friends, there are times when even they get things wrong.

In a recent recall notice, pet parents and fans of a popular dog food brand are being asked to double-check their freezers as a precaution over contaminated dog food. This specific lot at the center of the recall has potentially been contaminated with salmonella, a potentially lethal bacterium.

Pet Parents Beware of Salmonella Contamination

Out of precaution, pet parents who have recently purchased Chicken Recipe for Dogs Complete and Balanced from Albright's Raw Pet Food are being asked to discard or destroy the product due to concerns about salmonella.

While no illnesses associated with these lots have been confirmed or reported as of now, it's best to remove the product from the home. In pets, salmonella can cause illness that can later be transmitted to people. Infected pets tend to show signs of lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite and abdominal pain. Some pets may show no symptoms at all.

Even asymptomatic pets can spread the bacteria through feces or saliva, potentially contaminating other pets or humans. Contamination can even occur through contact with contaminated surfaces. Pet parents who have already given the product to their pets should contact their veterinarian for further inspection. In some cases, salmonella can be lethal in pets and people.

The product in question was sold as frozen one-pound bricks in clear vacuum packaging. The product has a best-by/expiration date of April 28, 2027 and a lot code of C001730. This lot was distributed directly to consumers nationwide, with select retailers also selling the item online.

This recall stems from a routine sampling conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, during which the lot tested positive for salmonella. For their part, Albright's Raw is conducting a further investigation, along with third-party laboratory testing. Albright's Raw customers seeking a refund can submit a receipt and photos of the product to info@albrightsraw.com, along with the place of purchase.
