How ‘Supergirl' Director Scored A-List Cameo Over Text (Exclusive)

Supergirl gets some much-needed support from David Corenswet's Superman and Jason Momoa's Lobo in her new solo film, but it's another big star who momentarily steals the spotlight.

And, if you didn't recognize his voice, you might not have even noticed he was in the film.

We're about to dig into some light spoiler territory here, so keep reading at your own risk. Supergirl is in theaters now.

Supergirl's Secret Cameo Revealed

Corenswet and Momoa aside, there's another A-list celebrity who makes a brief appearance in the film. Or, his voice, at least.

Early in the movie, Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El and sidekick Ruthye Marye Knoll take an intergalactic bus to another planet. Fueled by revenge, they're on the hunt for villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, a space pirate who poisoned Supergirl's dog Krypto and killed Ruthye's family.

The bus in question, however, has two drivers. While one is humanoid in form, the other is tiny, clearly extraterrestrial, and has a very noticeable voice.

Though there were rumors Seth Rogen would make a cameo in the movie, we can confirm it is, in fact, the star of The Studio playing the adorable alien.

How Seth Rogen's Cameo Happened

Men's Journal caught up with director Craig Gillespie and asked how Rogen's cameo came to be. The pair previously worked together on the Hulu miniseries Pam & Tommy, as well as the 2023 movie Dumb Money. Clearly, they enjoy collaborating.

"I love Seth and the amazing thing with him, we were in [post-production on Supergirl], we're cutting this alien, I'm literally putting a voice on it, and the editor is like, ‘We need to find an actor because they need to get started on the visual effects,'" Gillespie recalled.

"I was like, ‘Somebody like Seth would be great, but I can't imagine him just jumping into this,'" Gillespie continued, saying the editor then wondered if he'd even asked Rogen in the first place.

"So I texted him and he was like, ‘Sure.' And it's amazing. No hesitation," the director added. "I loved it and it was really generous of him to do that. He got to improvise on it, which was so fun."

No Additional Cameos Wanted

As previously mentioned, Supergirl, Superman, and Lobo all appear in the film, which follows the superhero-packed solo Superman movie. Corenswet's film included cameos from other members of the "Justice Gang," specifically, Green Lantern, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl.

When asked whether there were any other DC characters Gillespie wanted to sneak into his own movie, the director was adamant that there wasn't.

"What I kind of loved about this is it's a road movie. It's so singularly this two-hander between Supergirl and Ruthye, and they interact with these characters," Gillespie told Men's Journal. "It felt very natural that Lobo lives in that universe as a bounty hunter, he's gonna be around those nefarious characters. He's tracking them down."

"And they're on the fringes of that, trying to find their villain. It made sense they would cross paths, so nobody else came to mind," he added.

Supergirl is in theaters now.
