Stream the Oscar-Winning Epic 'Ben-Hur' for Free: Discover Its Historic $15.2M Budget
Long before Hollywood started spending hundreds of millions of dollars on superhero blockbusters, one biblical epic shattered every budget record in the industry.
When Ben-Hur premiered in 1959, it wasn't just one of the year's biggest movies, it was the most expensive film ever made at the time. More than six decades later, the Oscar-winning classic is still celebrated for its breathtaking scale, groundbreaking action, and one of the most famous scenes in movie history.
'Ben-Hur' Changed Hollywood Forever
Directed by William Wyler and based on Lew Wallace's novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, the film stars Charlton Heston as Judah Ben-Hur, a wealthy Jewish prince whose life is destroyed after a falling out with his childhood friend, the Roman tribune Messala.
Forced into slavery, Judah eventually earns his freedom and sets out on a path of revenge that leads to one of cinema's most unforgettable climaxes: the legendary chariot race.
According to MovieWeb, Ben-Hur carried a production budget of $15.2 million, making it the most expensive movie ever produced at the time. When marketing costs are factored in and adjusted for inflation, the film's total investment would equal roughly $350 million today.
The gamble paid off.
Ben-Hur became the second highest-grossing movie in history upon its release, trailing only Gone With the Wind, and won a record-tying 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Heston.
The Chariot Race Still Sets the Standard
If Ben-Hur is remembered for one sequence above all others, it's the spectacular nine-minute chariot race.
The scene took three months to film at Rome's Cinecittà Studios on what was then the largest movie set ever constructed. Approximately 78 horses were specially imported and trained for the production, while thousands of extras filled the grandstands to recreate the atmosphere of an ancient Roman arena.
The production itself was enormous. Reports estimate that roughly 10,000 extras appeared throughout the film, making it one of the largest movie productions ever mounted.
Without CGI or modern visual effects, every turn, collision, and thunderous lap around the track had to be filmed practically, which is a feat that continues to impress filmmakers and audiences more than 65 years later.
