Downtown Belleville has a new coffee shop. Joe & Onie’s: The Art of Carry-Out, opened its doors at 18 E. Main St. on Monday, Feb. 22.

Owner Steve Hemmer started with a “soft opening.” Hemmer is new to the industry, he explained, and used the first week to train staff and make sure they were absolutely ready for business.

The menu at Joe & Onie’s features a variety of regular coffee and espresso drinks, specialty and flavored coffees, and other beverages. Breakfast menu items include a small selection of baked goods, and the lunch menu offers a selection of sandwiches, salads and other snacks. Orders can be placed on the website.

Named after longtime Belleville residents, Joseph A. and Iona “Onie” Hemmer, the establishment is owned and operated by Steve Hemmer, the eldest of Joe and Onie’s 10 children, and his wife, Margie Hemmer. Joe and Onie’s granddaughter, Cassidy Schwoebel, is the manager.

According to its website, Joe & Onie’s offers a 10-star experience, each star representing one of the Hemmers’ children.

Eckert’s Country Restaurant reopens for indoor dining

Eckert’s Farm recently announced that Eckert’s Country Restaurant will reopen Monday, March 1.

The restaurant will resume indoor dining with its familiar homestyle Southern fare, according to a press release.

“This will be the first time that we’re able to operate at Eckert’s Country Restaurant since October when we closed for indoor dining, so we feel extremely grateful to have the opportunity to safely welcome our guests back again,” Jill Eckert Tantillo, vice president of food and marketing, stated in the release.

While guests will be welcomed back to dine at the restaurant, social distancing and safety guidelines will be in place for their benefit. Tables will be spaced six feet apart, and team members will wear masks and follow sanitation procedures. Guests will be required to wear masks and maintain social distancing while not eating or drinking at their tables.

In conjunction with the reopening, the restaurant will show appreciation for the community’s support by donating a meal to Operation Food Search for every Famous Fried Chicken Dinner purchased during opening week.

“Operation Food Search’s mission to end hunger in the St. Louis metropolitan area is more important than ever, and it felt like a fitting way to give thanks to the community for their support,” said Tantillo. “We have missed serving our farm favorites in person and look forward to providing our guests with a safe and memorable experience at the restaurant.”

Eckert’s Country Restaurant is located at 951 S. Green Mount Road in Belleville. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday-Sunday for dine-in and curbside pickup. Orders can be placed online or by phone at 618-233-0513. Reservations for dine-in service can be made online at eckerts.com.
